My Medical Word List©
by Gayla "Rennie" Bly

By popular demand, I've made available the word list I used when I was a Career Step student (2000-2001).
This is the file I created and used to study when I was a student. It is not to be considered a comprehensive medical terminology list. It is just my own personal list that I created in Excel, adding terms as I went along, and used as a study aid. Many students have trouble coming up with a design for a word list. This file will provide a format for you. Use it to study as is or add your own words to the list! The file is not write-protected, so you CAN add, delete, and edit terms. The file is in Excel format (created with Office 2000). You must already own Excel in order to make edits to this file. If you do not own Excel or do not wish to purchase Excel, you may still view this file by using the Excel Viewer, available for download here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/CD010225881033.aspx
Warning: The Excel viewer will only let you LOOK at the file. It won't let you make changes to the file. You must have Excel installed on your computer in order to edit the file.
"My Medical Word List" contains the following sections:

Rennie's Medical Words and Phrases Glossary This glossary contains over 34,000 medical words and phrases! Developed over 5 years by a working medical transcriptionist, this glossary contains words and phrases from almost every medical specialty, including both clinical care and acute care. It includes hundreds of the most commonly prescribed drug names, both generic and brand. The brand names are already capped for you, so you never have to spend time researching whether a drug is brand or generic. Helping to generate those much-desired continuations, many "regular" words and phrases are included in the glossary as well! Frequently dictated signs, tests (including laboratory tests), maneuvers, procedures, and diseases are at your fingertips and properly formatted. There are approximately 13,000 phrases and 22,000 words. This glossary will provide you with awesome continuations, saving you time and money!

Please note that this glossary is designed to be used by Instant Text users and is in an Instant Text *.glo format; however, a text (*.txt) version is available as well! If you use a text expansion program other than Instant Text, check with the manufacturer to see if your program will import text files into your text expansion program. Many of the better programs offer this feature. If you would prefer a text file format, please specify TEXT VERSION when ordering.

The price is $29.99 per glossary. My PayPal account accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express for your convenience. For payment by money order or cashier's check, please e-mail (rennie at renesue dot com) for ordering address. Please include your name for licensing purposes. (Purchase includes one license to one individual, to use on as many PCs as you like.) Each user must purchase a separate copy. The file will be e-mailed to you upon receipt of payment. (The zipped file is approximately 280 KB.) Thank you!

City Glossaries Each glossary contains the city names of a particular U.S. state. All entries are set up in the "word" advisory section of Instant Text (a text expansion program) to make entries easy to find and with the fewest keystrokes. There are two entries for each city, in the following format:
#1 City
#2 City, State
These entries can be real timesavers because you will not have to spend so much time hunting down that unfamiliar city just dictated!

Please note that these glossaries are designed to be used by Instant Text users and are in an Instant Text *.glo format; however, text (*.txt) versions are available as well! If you would prefer a text file format, please specify TEXT VERSION when ordering.

These glossaries were developed by a transcriptionist (for transcriptionists), but others (such as writers) will also find them an invaluable tool.

Dates Glossary If you'd rather enter numbers than text, this glossary is for you. The glossary contains 2 entries for each date, in the following format:
#1 the short form nmmdd yields mmdd
#2 the short form nmmddyy yields mmddyyyy
For example, for the date "December 31, 2007" to appear on your screen, you would enter n123107. For "December 31" to appear on your screen, you would enter n1231.
This glossary contains dates for the year 2007. However, it is easy to convert them to another year by simply going into Notepad and doing a couple of "Find/Replace" commands. For instance, to convert the date to the year 2008, you would first do a Find for 2007, replacing it with 2008. Then, you would do a Find for 07, replacing it with 08 (be careful not to replace the 07 for July or the 07 for the 7th of a month, however!). If you have problems converting them for future years, just drop me a line and I'll do my best to help out.  =)

Please note that this glossary is designed to be used by Instant Text users.

This glossary was developed by a transcriptionist (for transcriptionists), but others (such as writers) will also find it a great tool.
